$50,000,000 in guaranteed money to Sam Bradford. If I'm a quality vet qb, say a Philip Rivers, how in the world can you justify the ridiculous money paid to unproven, noodle armed qbs like Bradford.

Maybe it's time for Goodell to stop holding "town hall" meetings with Pack fans and start chatting with the NBA's commissioner David Stern. At least the NBA has a rookie salary cap. If the NFL would impose a similar cap maybe there would be an equitable distribution of money to the vets instead of the uproven Bradfords of the world.

Any thoughts fellow Athenalinkers? Is it high time for the NFL to implement a rookie salary cap?

context, kind poster...this new ceiling is better for all current and future players.

The players are cutting into the ridiculous profits from the OWNERS: RIDICULOUS profits from official team apparel, public funded stadiums, outrageous television network contracts etcetera.

Please resist the temptation to frame this as player against player - this is players versus owners for a share of the creamy fluffy good life pie. At least the players have to risk their health and bodies to get their riches from the paying football public. Get all you can, while you can, players...go players, owners be damned. Collective bargining agreement showdown to commence soon

Do you really believe that Bradford's deal "cuts" into the owners' profits? Sammy's deal is a mere bag of shells compared to what the Rams' ownership group will rake in this year.

The owners have capitulated to Bradford's demands, much like they did with Stafford last year, because the lack of a rookie salary cap allows them to pit player against player, rookie vs. vet. The enmity between veteran NFL players and their rookie counterparts is unrivaled in any other major sports league. This, however, shouldn't be news. From scab games to former players literally begging for their slice of the "pie," the NFL's history is rife with labor discord.

Don't fool yourself, kind poster, Bradford's contract amounts to nothing more than a red herring. The owners know what they're doing here, for the multi-millions they throw at the very few allows the casual observer to believe the NFL plutocracy (aren't the owners their own governing body?) is a magnanimous lot.

I'm not saying a rookie salary cap would solve all of the NFL's labor woes, but it certainly might help diffuse the continual, pernicious problems NFL players encounter at the bargaining table.

Thoughts, R4E...

Anything the players get as salaries (no matter how you frame them as mere crumbs compared to what the owners rake in, which is the truth that I never denied - but rather highlighted) is money they have to scrap for - on the field, at the bargining table and amongst each other.

That misdirection you threw out there is precisely what the owners want to propagate - which is "it is the rookie contracts that are ruining the game! and the overall player's share - we will be bankrupt if it keeps going like this."

I dont understand your veteran versus rookie argument - and rookie salary cap rant, kind poster. Is the solution for the player's to kill each other over the crumbs?

I am saying whatever the player's get it ought to be more, compared to the crumbs they are collectively gathering. the solution is not to curtail the Bradford's earning power - the solution is to put pressure on the ownership group. Now you may say that corporatocracy is impossible to oppose...but I dont know if I buy that at all

The solution, kind poster, can be found in the NBA--where equitable distribution of money between vets and rookies is commonplace.

Is John Hall, who I believe is the number one overall pick in the NBA's last draft, worth more than Kobe Bryant?...of course not. Was Shaq worth more than Hakeem?...maybe 5 years into his career. These are, granted, extreme examples; but extremity rules the day in the NFL when it comes to rookie paydays while a Matt Schaub, a fine qb in his own right, toils for mere beans compared to Bradford.

Do you deem the NBA's business model broken as well, R4E? Or can the NFL learn something from Stern's league here?

The guaranteed money is ridiculous, but no one is holding a gun to the Rams GM to pay it either. I agree with you TBUC, I don't see what is so great about Bradford. But the NFL cannot impose a rookie salary cap, it has to be collectively bargained in the new CBA. A ton of juniors entered the draft this year precisely because they expect there to be a rookie salary cap in 2011. I don't see how the NFL can also change to an 18 game season without it being collectively bargained either, with some huge givebacks by the owners.
